A study by Dina Hafez Griauzde et al clearly shows that obesity care is more than just prescribing an anti-obesity medication.
It is not surprising that patients enrolled in a weight navigation program (WNP) experienced better treatment outcomes than patients receiving usual care.
What makes the study particularly interesting is the difference in prescribed anti-obesity medications (AOMs).
Proportion receiving “older” oral medications (Contrave, Qsymia or Xenical)
WNP: 47%
Usual Care: 25%
Proportion receiving liraglutide/semaglutide
WNP: 30% / 23%
Usual Care: 40% / 35%
Relative weight loss at 12 months
WNP−7.0%
Usual Care:−4.7%
Despite using a higher proportion of older oral AOMs, greater weight loss was achieved in the WNP group.
Again, different patients require different medications, but all patients need comprehensive care.
